What is in $4,700,000.00?

I was channel surfing this afternoon and came across a television evangelist program, who was collecting money.  They were doing so to “spread the Gospel.”

I looked at a board behind them and the goal was $4,700,000.00.  To that point they had collected 1.9 million dollars.

It stunned me, then I just got mad!

Is “spreading the Gospel” important?  Of course it is.

There is more than one way to spread it, at the cost of over four-million dollars??

Christians, one of the best ways to “spread the Gospel” is taking care of the homeless, hungry, suffering, sick and dying.

Over four-million dollars would build countless homes.  Buy a whole lot of groceries and medicine.

Over four-million dollars would clothe the naked and buy a lot of blankets for the cold.  This would also pay for medical care for those who cannot afford it.

My list can go on and on.

My point is:

How can you give that much money for a television evangelist program, when there is a child under a bridge, freezing, while trying to sleep?

When there is a person dying because they do not have the medical care they need, because they cannot afford it?

When children and our elderly are going to bed hungry tonight, and will go hungry tomorrow?

This makes no sense to me???

Maybe I am wrong and maybe you think I am.

I know this within myself.

Before I give that much money to keep something/someone on television:

I will get rid of my television.

I will feed a hungry/sick child.

I will keep someone warm during the winter, and cool in the summer.

To me this is just the “wrong way” to “spread the Gospel.”

Jesus, nowhere, in any form or fashion ever said, to do something like this.

Our first concern is always, compassion, care, and love for others.

So while you are watching this television program tonight that you supported, please hear the cry of that hungry child, that needed your money more.

God Bless, SR

Great points. It is hard to understand. I know many people who do this and I can’t really explain it other than they feel encouraged by the preachers who read the bible to them every day. Hopefully their ministries give something to poor people as well as spending millions on TV broadcasts.

      Hey Scott,

Thanks for comment. The way I understood this, for one they do this every single month. Another, is that this is to just “keep” them on the air.

I heard someone say one time, “If Christians were doing what they were supposed to be doing there would be no need for welfare.” I think this proves that point well.

I “can’t explain it either,” Scott. I know this, this really got my “dander” going. If I had that kind of money I would do my best to make sure the suffering would have a home, food, medicine and a warm place to sleep.

Last year at Christmas on the tree at Church I drew a name of a child. All that was wanted was a blanket, for that child!!! I mean it broke my heart. I got the whole family blankets plus toys for the kids. Not to toot my horn, but people do not realize how many are truly suffering. Again thanks for comment and God Bless, SR

It is good for me to keep my priorities strait. The mega preachers probably don’t need money like nearby needy people do.

        Hey Scott,

As far as I am concerned they do not “need money like nearby needy people do.” You know Mother Teresa said, “Find your own Calcutta in your own community.” Those words have never left me.

I think what people need to do Scott, is find a Church in their own community. Support that Church and the programs they have in that Church for the needy.

In my Church we buy school supplies for the kids when school starts. We buy coats for them in the winter. Of course we always have a Christmas Tree with a tag stating the age of the child and what they are wanting for Christmas.

We bring food for the hungry in our community, and we take up donations for victims of hurricanes and the like.

We go to the nursing home once a month and give a sandwich, chip, and dessert dinner for those there. Play games etc…

My Calcutta is where I live. I do give to St. Jude’s as my charity but that is it. The rest goes to those around me.

These “mega preachers” to me are just bilking money out of others, and they are living in three story homes, with swimming pools etc… telling everyone else how rich God is going to make them for giving their money to the ministry. The Bible says, “Ministers will buy and sell us like merchandise.” I never get that out of my mind either.

Just some FYI as to what my priorities are. In fact I have written a post on it for my Sunday Mass readings which will be either next week or the week after. I write them two weeks ahead so I can think about them. God Bless, SR

It’s these preachers, perhaps I’m guessing part of the prosperity theology, which is tarnishing the image of Christianity so much in the world. The best way to spread the gospel is not by cramming in down someone’s throat, nobody likes being told why they’re sinners or whatever. It’s instead practicing the message Jesus had, to show love for others, compassion, understanding and helping where you can. Christianity didn’t spread because he told people what to do, but rather he showed by example how to lead a perfect life.

      Hey David,

Thanks for comment. How I agree with everything you said here. I always say, “The easiest thing in the world to do is to write a check.” I am not saying this is not needed, as I support St. Jude.

The hardest thing to do is to give of ourselves, our time, and our love. I know at times when this happens to me, it is because I set my priorities above the needs of others. Sometimes I think what I have to do “just cannot wait.” Of course I have to repent for these moments and try to always do better.

As far as the “tarnishing of Christianity,” to me in some forms and fashions it has almost destroyed it. In doing so, I think has helped to destroy many people.

God does honor our giving, but He does it when we give out of love and not to “get.” When people do not receive what some of these “ministers” promise to them from God, it throws them into much despair. I had a friend who committed suicide by drinking anti-freeze because of it. Does not get much worse than that. Again thanks for comment and God Bless, SR
